Get "Fit for Duty" in 2014...

Did you know that recent research shows that rates of overweight and obese individuals in the fire and police service are higher than those found in the general public?   These statistics alone should urge everyone in the protective services including administration staff, to department chiefs, to individual officers and firefighters to think creatively and join in efforts to reverse the negative trends of unhealthy body weight and poor physical fitness.

Now is the time for all of us to step up and take action!

Introducing the MPPOA/ Firefighters Local 311 Fitness Challenge
The Battle of the badges.

A competition between the Local 311 and MPPOA (Madison Professional Police Officers Association) that promotes “strength in numbers” by connecting civilian employees, command staff and sworn union personnel with the goal of improved health and wellness.  This competition aims to promote teamwork, camaraderie, and healthy habits that can help transform lives and prolong careers.

What is it?  The Fitness Challenge is a 12-week competition beginning with weigh-ins/ assessments on February 5th, 2014 and ends May 7th (12 weeks), 2014.  Regardless of age, level of fitness or fitness goal, the 2014 Local 311/ MPPOA Fitness Challenge provides special incentives to help participants achieve health and wellness goals.

How does it work?  All participants shall be Department (Local 311/ MPPOA) sworn or civilian employees.   Participants form teams consisting of a minimum of 4 members with a maximum of 8 members.  Prizes are given to the teams with the largest percentage of weight loss.  Individuals are also eligible for prizes based on the largest percentage of weight lost and most inspiring fitness accomplishment(s).  All or any participants that lose 4% of their total weight and/or achieve their initial fitness goal(s) are eligible for raffle prizes.

All participants that lose 4% body weight or achieve their fitness goal (essay required) are eligible.  Prizes are to be determined based on entries, sponsors and union contributions.  Examples are gift cards, Brewers Tickets, massages, health club memberships...

What are the Participation Requirements?  All you need to do to enter is fill-out the Fitness Challenge Application (and pay the entry fee of $10/applicant).   Everyone is encouraged to join a team (even if you are just competing in the "inspirational" category) but  you can enter if you are not on one.   Scales will be available for weigh-ins at all Police Districts, on the West side at Fire Station #7, East side will be at Fire Station #8, South side at Fire Station #6, Central will be at Fire Station #1.

Beginning weigh-ins will take place between February 5th and February 10th.  Each individual needs to complete an application, signed with entry fee and turn in after the initial weigh-in or assessment.
